DOCOMO PACIFIC is a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s leading mobile operator. Founded in 1991 and Headquartered in Tamuning, Guam, DOCOMO PACIFIC is the largest provider of personal, residential, enterprise connectivity, and entertainment services in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. DOCOMO PACIFIC was named Guam’s most reliable network with the fastest speeds and best coverage by GWS in 2019 and was named a 5-time winner of Best of The Pacific. DOCOMO PACIFIC is dedicated to bringing you and your family closer to the things that matter most.
In 2017, DOCOMO PACIFIC completed and made operational its 280-kilometer ATISA submarine fiber optic cable connecting Guam to the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). This investment allowed for the further development and launch of enhanced mobile and new fixed wireless access (FWA) services.
Challenges
The primary challenges for DOCOMO PACIFIC included deployment locations with non-line of sight (NLOS) conditions and high-density tree foliage. The result in all cases is greatly reduced signal quality, leading to significantly lower-than-expected data rates and overall poor subscriber experience. Aside from the primary challenges, DOCOMO PACIFIC also required a cost-effective solution with deployment flexibility and scalability to meet bandwidth demands and future network growth.
The company tested a variety of equipment, carefully evaluating several different manufacturers’ solutions, applicable technologies, and how they worked. However, none of the solutions could adequately address the challenges.
How BEC’s Solution Helped
To deliver on the promise of ultra-fast, secure, and reliable broadband for both residential and business subscribers, DOCOMO PACIFIC required a robust, high-performance CPE solution. DOCOMO PACIFIC selected BEC Technologies and its 6500AEL R15 Enterprise Multi-Service LTE Router, featuring dual-WAN interfaces, 4-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, high-power dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11ac), USB 2.0, dynamic routing, VPN, and robust firewall security features.
With the deployment of the BEC 6500AEL R15, coverage and signal reception issues were resolved. Additionally, it is fully compatible with DOCOMO PACIFIC’s network, supporting all of their licensed spectrum LTE bands for increased data speeds through carrier aggregation. In addition to the exceptional performance, the 6500AEL provides an intuitive web interface enabling quick and easy subscriber self-installation. The Dual-WAN interface allows DOCOMO PACIFIC to support high availability “always-on” connectivity incorporating failover and load balancing for business-critical operations.
DOCOMO PACIFIC is also utilizing, BECentral®, BEC’s cloud-based remote device management platform. As a result, they benefit from zero-touch provisioning, visual dashboards with real-time analytics intelligence, detailed reporting, performance monitoring, extensible API, and complete lifecycle management. BECentral® has become a critical component of network operations and support.
